Dr. Genevieve Smith founded the Responsible AI Initiative at the UC Berkeley AI Research Lab, bringing together technical and sociotechnical expertise to tackle AI's most pressing responsibility challenges. She is a member of the professional faculty at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and a research fellow at Stanford University.
Her research primarily examines bias in AI systems and advances innovation and infrastructure for inclusive and equitable AI globally. Her work has been published at leading AI conferences and journals, and shared in outlets like Nature, The Guardian, and The Economist, shaping both academic and public understanding of AI's societal impact. She advises policymakers and practitioners, including in prior roles as co-director of the UC Berkeley AI Policy Hub and USAID responsible AI fellow.
